For Kira, being a rug designer at ModernRugs.com is more than a job; it’s the realization of a lifelong dream to be an artist. Each day, she transforms client visions and mood boards into unique artwork, balancing creativity with technical expertise. Sometimes that means collaborating directly with clients over calls, and other times it means shaping original designs for ModernRugs.com’s own line of rugs. She also manages Modern Designer Rugs, our curated sister site, where her eye for design helps highlight both our collections and other standout designer pieces.

Kira’s foundation is deeply rooted in the world of fibers. With a BFA and nearly two decades of experience in weaving and fiber art, she brings hands-on knowledge to rug design. Her path included a weaving intensive at Vävstuga School of Weaving, time spent spinning and dyeing wool on farms, and even a summer on an angora goat farm learning about mohair.

She later worked for four years at Gurdy Run Woolen Mill in Pennsylvania, where she operated yarn-making equipment and immersed herself in the production process. All of this experience gives Kira a true understanding of materials: yarn, fiber, and weaving that informs every rug she designs.

One of her hidden superpowers is color matching, a skill that might sound simple but requires immense training and intuition. “Getting the right colors is crucial; it’s what makes a rug come alive,” she explains. She also leans on her yoga training and meditation practice to stay centered, especially when multiple projects pile up. “Stress can kill creativity, so I’ve learned how to ground myself and stay in the flow,” she says.

What Kira loves most is the creative fulfillment her role provides: “Since I was a child, I wanted to be an artist. Seeing my artwork turned into rugs for large projects is an incredible feeling.” She’s also had unforgettable opportunities, including traveling to India and Morocco to meet rug weavers, bucket-list experiences that deepened her connection to the craft.

Outside of work, Kira is fueled by movement and challenge. From triathlons to power yoga, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, and weightlifting, she thrives on testing her limits. “Doing hard things has shown me I’m capable of so much more than I realized,” she says, crediting those experiences with teaching her emotional regulation and resilience.
For Kira, every rug is more than a design; it’s a blend of tradition, artistry, and modern creativity, brought to life by someone who truly lives the craft.
